The Opportunity

Visy Food Cans, part of the wider Visy Group, is hiring a Line Maintainer to be based in Coburg North, VIC. This is a 12-hour Night Shift position, working on the following rotating shift pattern (1st week: 3 nights on, 4 off, 2nd week:  3 nights on, 4 off, 3rd week: 4 nights on, 3 off). For the first 3 months of employment, whilst undergoing training, you will be required to work on the day shift. This will be 8 hour shifts for the first month, then you will be moved to 12 hour shifts for the remaining 2 months.

As a Line Maintainer you will be responsible for the effective utilisation and co-ordination of the machinery under your control. This includes ensuring product quality conforms to the Manufacturing Standards & Process Control Plans, equipment performs to production targets ensuring its condition is both mechanical sound and in a safe working state at all times. Line maintainers will be trained to rotate through all the end making facilities at the Coburg plant.

Other key responsibilities will include:

  • Operating machinery.
  • Quality checks and adjustments.
  • Fixing machine breakdowns.
  • Responsible for change overs.
  • Forklift duties as required to meet production requirements.
  • Responsible for removing tooling, auditing and completing machine tooling cleans.
  • Responsible for targeting downtime area’s and troubleshoot corrective actions to maximise production output, improve product quality, maintain and reduce spoilage levels.
  • Responsible for checking scheduling and storage requirements to ensure appropriate levels are available
  • Identify potential process improvements, and ad hoc production issues. Work with Production Manager and Process Improvement Manager to find solutions and implement corrective actions.
  • Responsible for keeping the plant clean and tidy, equipment maintained and preventative measures used to ensure continual availability of equipment.

What you will bring to the team

We are looking for someone that is trade qualified with practical hands-on experience. A Trade Cert as a Fitter/Turner, Toolmaker, Motor Mechanic or similar is mandatory for this role. You will be required to complete a Mechanical test in your onsite interview to demonstrate your skills.

Although this role requires someone with a trade background you need to be comfortable with the fact that your main responsibilities will involve operating the machines, some days you may only use your trade a small portion of the day.

Other key skills and experience include:

  • Trade Cert as a Fitter/Turner, Toolmaker, Motor Mechanic or similar
  • LF Forklift license & experience would be advantageous
  • Experience working in a manufacturing environment
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Sound mechanical aptitude and a high trouble shooting ability.
  • Skills in dismantling & re-assembling equipment

About Visy Food Cans

Over 90% of all Australian-made food and nutritional powder cans are produced by Visy. We make about 500 million food cans and collect over 24,000 tonnes of recycled steel each year. To meet strict specification requirements, food cans contain around 10% recycled material. Once used, the cans are almost 100% recyclable. The recycled steel from our cans can be made into things like washing machines, automotive parts and kitchen wares.
